Description
So an early start and we headed off to the Colosseum for the start line. This is where the entrance is along with the toilets and bag drops. As with all big races the queues quickly grow.
It is a short walk to the start at Fori Imperiali in front of the Vittoriano, in Piazza Venezia. Lovely
In 2023 the start line was rewarded with a fly past from the Italian air force
This race is packed with sights on the course especially in the first and last sections.
There are lots of water and food stops along the route. Even if the weather is hot.
Although there are cobblestones on the route this has not proven to be an issue while running, even once on a wet race day.
Key highlights for us during the race were Circo Massimo and of course the run up to St. Peter’s Basilica. At about
30 Kms
you are are close to the zoo and a bit of a climb. This part of the route is rather dull, but once you get past the 36 Kms
you are back in the city proper. Some of the streets in the final section are narrow and you have to be careful of people jumping out in front of you trying to cross the road. A run through Piazza Navona tells you that the finish is close and the crowds are much larger.
A great event and of course a pasta meal the evening before is easy to find.
Getting in
Simple entry for the Rome marathon. Go to the web site and enter as there are no qualifying times required.
Getting there
For the 2023 event we flew from Edinburgh using Ryan Air which was perfect there and back.
There are two airports in Rome, Ciampino and Fiumicino and we have used both for this event. Regular bus services from the airports into town - but buy the return fare.
Expo
The expo is located at PALAZZO DEI CONGRESSI, which is a metro ride from the city centre.
This is a big expo, but seemed like there wasn't a lot of marathon branded items for sale. This is where you pick up your number and event tee shirt.
Like a lot of marathons you are forced around a loop before reaching the number pick up.
