Description

We've updated this description and GPS file attachments following another run of the race in 2025. Although the day wasn't as hot this time the race was still as tough.
There is a bag check before the start of the run to make sure you have all the correct safety equipment with you. This has changed a wee bit since the last time we were there as you do your bag check first then pick up your number, all in the same hall. This is a quick process. The hall has limited toilet facilities though there are more at the car park beside the police station. The race asks runners to park up at the duck pond which is not far from the registration hall. The race is very exposed and a slght turn in the Scottish weather will prove to be a real challenge on this route. Pay attention to the safety requirements.
The race itself is a glorious journey through some wonderful Scottish scenery and we can't speak highly enough of this race. Support pops up all over the place and in areas where you don't expect it. Hats off to the mountain rescue people providing moral support along with emergency support.
The race start has moved a wee bit from previous years and now starts near the entrance to the highland games arena. The run is initially on small tarred road until Mar Lodge. The race now takes you right up to the lodge before a left turn and up onto the trail. Good quality running up to the Derry Lodge at about
13.4 Kms
which is also the point of the cut off time.
After the lodge there comes a lot of climb on paths designed to trip you up and a boulder field which is good fun, but once over the top and with Aviemore visible in the distance you just jump with joy. Well maybe not jump, but you do earn a big smile.
The trail is mostly downhill to Aviemore with a fair bit of running on a mix of paths through the forest. The first part of the forest route is a tripping hazzard with tree roots everywhere. This part eventually joins the main road to Aviemore. Although only a few KMs this part is turned into a run of
3000 Kms
in your tired head along a pavement beside the busy road.
The race finish line has also changed since out last attempt with the run not going under the railway to the main street. Instead once you are over the river then it's a straight line to the end.
This is a race you have to try
Getting in
Apply as soon as possible, as this is a brilliant race to be involved in. The capacity increased in 2025 to 325.
Getting there
You need to drive or use public transport, the bus, the day before. No public buses will get you to Braemar in time for the start of this race. Buses are available from the finish back to the start if you plan on leaving your car in Braemar. There is also an early morning bus from Aviemore to the start. Both bus options are optional extras on the sign up.
Pre Run
No, but again just go and enjoy Royal Deeside and a gizillion different routes.
Start
Breamar
End
Avimore
Finish
The new finish line seems like a mass of people on arrival. Very supportive on your final wee incline up to the finish. We settled on watermelon and water though we didn't see the welcome soup of previous years. On a warm day you ask ? We do like a wee cup of soup, it's a Scottish thing.
Staying
Limited hotels in the area, book early. As there is an early bus from Aviemore there would be more choice of places to stay there compared with Braemar.
