Description
A small race and very friendly with a good showing from local running clubs and in particular Maryhill Harriers with Kenny being one of their own.
With the simple GO command we set off from outside the church and headed along a single tarred road for the first section. Huge houses on this road which eventually turns to a dirt road. There are several gates to go through which close on their own so even though people leave them open for you by the time you get there they are closed.
On this first section there is some climb, but nothing too serious and you are soon rewarded with lovely views of the surrounding countryside. All in all it makes for a very pleasant initial part of a race.
At around
4.5 Kms
you start a descent to the the main road for a short length alongside the road and passing the Glengoyne distillery which marks the half way point. A right turn away from the road leads you up onto the West Highland Way and trail running back to Blanefield.
However beware, at
7.4 Kms
the biggest climb starts and continues for about 2 Kms
. Nothing too steep but the length and stage of the race takes a toll. You do get a nice bit of downhill at the end of this part. The race throws one last hill at you right at the end when you head up to the main road and up to the finish...aaggghhh. That will test what you have left in your legs.
A great trail race and perhaps the nicest one we have done of this length. A great tribute from Maryhill Harriers to Kenny Stevenson.
The route for this race is covered in the excellent Glasgow Running routes site which includes pictures along the route and a description. Click here to open: Blanefield Glengoyne
