Description

So this route is a good bit shorter than the planned route due to us missing a key turn and ending up back at the castle before we should have. Although we did manage to get the distance of our run up to over
12 Kms
the route was a mix of sometimes dull and sometimes really nice. So this is a short one until we get back to Inveraray and detail the real route.
There is a fair bit of parking available and on this visit we decided against the loch side car park and went into the big car park beside the entrance to the castle - both council parks you have to pay for. There is also a car park in the castle grounds which you also have to pay for but that doesn't open till later in morning. Anyway it's a short run from either of the council car parks into the grounds of the castle. If you are there early the barrier will be down to stop cars but allows the runners past. This part is small road with an allocated and marked walking space and takes you up past the castle before crossing a bridge and onto the trail. Worth taking a few pictures of the lovely green castle.
However, we are here to talk about a running route and once on the trail you start the steady climb to the top. This is a mix of trail, grassy field path for a short section and forest road. There is no escaping the up but generally it is a nice and steady climb with no really steep sections. Overall on this part there is
205 m
of climb over about
2 Kms
.
Lovely views from the top and from there it is mainly back the way you came. We did take and alternative route over the weir on the way back and like we stated at the start the route back didn't go quite as intended but we felt this short run was still worth adding.
Over the years we have had many ditched runs which have never got this far, so always nice to have something to show for the run.
Details last updated in July 2025.
