Description

This is not an easy route but does showcase the beauty of Scotland. First up where to park. We parked just outside the small church just off the main road and that is where the route starts. However, there is a larger car park for hill walkers about
1 Kms
along the return road that leads to the Dalmunzie house hotel. If no parking at the church just drive over the bridge and take the first right. The car park will be on your right. The route is the same no matter where you park.
The run is mainly on dirt road and trail and you start straight away on the dirt road going up the glen alongside the Shee Water. This first section is a very gradual climb with
143 m
of climb in the first
7.6 Kms
. The mountains seem to come up around you and you soon feel as though you are the only person out here. The path does get narrow on the later sections going up the glen but keep the burn to your left until you are past the first of the small waterfalls at about
8.9 Kms
.
At this stage you cross the burn and this is where it gets interesting for the next
1 Kms
. There is no obvious path on this short section adn you are basically hill walking rather than running. A path might be more obvious coming in the other direction, from above, but we didn't see it. Make sure you have navigation available here. The altitude also makes itself known with cold winds even in summer as you are very exposed to the weather. That said enjoy the section as much as you can, we had a herd of deer pass us by.
After the short tough section the path appears on the shoulder of the hill and the views are stunning. However, that big hill that appears to the left is where you are heading. So good quality path but a lot of climb coming up. The path takes you to the top of Glas Tulaichean at about
1051 m
via a ridge and at that point a well deserved rest before the run back to the car.
The return leg isn't great running although it's a landrover track. The road is made up of loose stones that can be hard to enjoy while running downhill, so take care on this section. At about
16 Kms
the road improves and you are on a gentle decent running alongside the burn. This does involve a few crossings with the final one impossible to keep your feet dry even in summer.
At
19 Kms
you arrive at Glenlochsie farm where the dirt road ends and a tarred road takes over. Enter the farm courtyard and the tarred road is on your right just after the buildings.
From this point it is gentle running past the Dalmunzie house hotel and back to your car.
