Description

So here is a nice wee loop for those of you paying a visit to Bowmore, just like we were. This is the only run we did on our last trip but our walks have suggested there are lots more to be created once we get the chance. However lets discuss this Bowmore loop.
We started this run at the harbour just to get a falvour of the early morning and from there headed straight up the main street towards the Round Church at the top of the hill. Quite a landmark with lots of history. You go round the Round Church and past the cemetry before turning left onto a small country road. We were lucky and the weather was ok, but feels like this part of the route might be a little exposed on the wrong day. This road goes on for about
4.5 Kms
before reaching a tee junction at the B8016. This is where you turn off onto the trail section which is slighly hidden on your right, almost looks like an old layby or such like.
From this point it's nice trail running with sections alongside the River Laggan though no need to cross over. For our route we kept on this trail until it reached the A846 at Corry Cottage with a distance of
8.2 Kms
in the legs . Now this is the worst part you have reached as the return takes you on the A846 back to Bowmore. This road is a main Islay road and can get busy at certain times of the day, there is no pavement. Take care here or choose your time for the run well. This section brought down the overall rating for us.
At
10.6 Kms
you arrive back at the Round Church and a nice easy downhill back to the harbour. You might not feel like it just after running
11.1 Kms
but the Bowmore Distillery is well worth a visit with lovel views out over the water.
