RACE DESCRIPTION - Loch Rannoch Marathon
This is generally an easy race to get into right up until a few days before the event. At the time of writing the entry this was through Run Nation.
For this one we choose to drive up on the morning and return after the run. Beware though if you take this option as some of the routes are single track and you can meet a deer on the road in the morning.
There is a railway station about
21 Kmsaway from the start but travel from and to there will be an issue.
No expo just a simple number pick up.
No pre runs but there are some nice routes around Kinloch Rannoch.
After our two hour drive up to Kinloch Rannoch our day really starts after parking up on the field at the start location. This is well organised with lots of marshalls to guide you into your parking place. From parking it's a very short walk to the tent to pick up your number. After number pick up we just went and sat in the car until the race was ready to start - you can see the start line from the car parking area. Note that the toilets will have large lines waiting.
The race starts with a loop round the village just after the
2.5 Kmsmark you are out of the village and running along the north side of Loch Rannoch. The race is on open roads so there are a few cars to watch out for though not too many. There is lovely scenary so enjoy the gentle undulating road.
At around the
20.5 Kmsmark you start the only real climb which is not too steep or too long. This takes you up the road towards Rannoch Station before turning and coming back down the same road. At the junction at the top of the loch a right turn takes you on the south loch road and heads back to the finish.
The second half seems nicer than the first half but the undulations are a little larger. The route ends up back on the initial loop you did at the start but at this point you have less than
2 Kmsto go. Small crowds await at the finish but they are very encouraging.
Prior to 2019 some of the water stations were unmanned but this seems to have been resolved now.
This is a small race and that's reflected at the finish where a small tent is used to give out the medals and tee shirts.
Limited snacks are also available.
Where to stay
There is one hotel in Kinloch Rannoch and a MacDonald resort hotel close by if you decide to stay. Also various accomadation lets are available.
