Directions to start point
This run is a real favourite but it took us a few attempts before we managed to do it. Our first attempt was stopped by large locked gates on the path closer to Aberfoyle and after that it was the Scottish weather that stopped us. There's a short
2 Kms
road run from the car park to the start of the route proper which you have to be very careful on. Not many cars but no pavements for most of it. The route takes you through the small village of Kinlochard and along the banks of Loch Ard where the early morning views can be stunning. Even the drive from Aberfoyle is lovely.
The start of the trail portion is through an old gate after about
2.2 Kms
; we have included a picture of the gate in the pictures section to help. The gate is just after the Lochside bed and breakfast. Once through the gate the path starts a steep ascent zig zagging up through the trees before popping out onto the open hillside. The early part of the path is quite overgrown but it does improve once you are at the tree line.
At the tree line the views become wonderful and improve the higher up you get. To create a loop we head back towards Aberfoyle and enjoy a short descent before the climbing starts again. The path basically does a U turn and heads back in the direction you came from but higher up the hill. Not unusual to see herds of deer here and it is a great uphill running route never getting too steep. A small hut/house sits near the top but once on the top the views in all directions are wonderful. On the way back this route takes you on the steep descent before joining back to the route that same out of the tree lines. From there you follow your way back to the car park.
